Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects
The Kentucky Chapter seeks to represent and further the aims and policies
of the American Society of Landscape Architects as they fall within
the domain of the Chapter. Chapter members are those Fellows, Members
and Associates of ASLA in good professional standing who are located
within the defined territory of the Chapter, the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
What Is Licensure And Why Is It Needed?
Licensing of landscape architects protects the public health, safety,
and welfare of citizens who cannot be reasonably expected to know, or
recognize, inadequate or defective landscape architectural design work.
The potential for harm from bad landscape architecture design and planning
is clear. Landscape architects offer complex professional services which
are not easily understood by the average consumer and which have lasting
impacts on the land and its users. If their work is improperly performed
there exists a very real threat of irreparable harm— harm for
which money cannot compensate. Poor design can lead to injury or death
of users of the land and cause grave economic damages to the land owners.
As such, licensing is one means by which professional performance can
be regulated. Licensure is required to practice Landscape Architecture
in Kentucky and is governed by the State Board of Examiners and Registration
of Landscape Architects of Kentucky. The Board determines eligibility
for licensure, requirements for maintaining licensure and registration,
and defines the parameters for the practice of Landscape Architecture
in Kentucky as specified in the Kentucky Revised Statutes, KRS Chapter
323A.
